Glutathione: Why I Prefer Liposomal Over IVs and Injections
Glutathione is one of those compounds that gets talked about everywhere in wellness and longevity.
IV clinics offer it. Some practices inject it. Supplement companies sell capsules, powders, and liposomal versions.
I use glutathione too.
But for most of my patients, when I want to support glutathione levels, I usually prefer a quality liposomal product over an IV or injection.
Here's why.
What Is Glutathione?
Glutathione is an antioxidant that your body naturally produces from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine.
It's found throughout the body and plays an important role in protecting our cells from oxidative stress.
Glutathione also participates in detoxification pathways, immune function, cellular redox balance, and the recycling of other antioxidants.
Your liver uses glutathione extensively, but this isn't simply a “liver detox” supplement.
Glutathione is part of the antioxidant defense system used throughout the body.
Why Liposomal?
One challenge with supplemental glutathione has historically been oral delivery.
Glutathione is a peptide, and the digestive system isn't always friendly to peptides.
That's where liposomal technology becomes interesting.
A liposomal product surrounds glutathione within tiny lipid-based structures called liposomes. The goal is to help protect the glutathione during digestion and improve its delivery and absorption.
Human studies using oral liposomal glutathione have demonstrated increases in glutathione levels in the blood and certain cells.
That changed the conversation for me.
Why Not Just Use an IV?
IV glutathione bypasses the gastrointestinal system and delivers glutathione directly into the bloodstream.
There are situations where IV administration may make sense.
But I always ask
Do we need an IV to accomplish what we're trying to accomplish?
An IV requires an appointment, venous access, supplies, clinical time, and additional cost. An injection still requires a needle and may need repeated administration.
For routine glutathione support, I often don't see the need to make something more complicated than it needs to be.
If I can use a quality liposomal formulation that a patient can take consistently at home, that's usually much more practical.
Consistency!
This is probably the biggest reason I like liposomal glutathione.
A therapy doesn't help much if it's inconvenient enough that you rarely use it.
I'd rather have a patient consistently using an appropriate oral product than feeling like they need to schedule an IV every time they want glutathione support.
That doesn't mean IV glutathione is bad.
It means route of administration should have a reason behind it.
Sometimes an IV makes sense. Sometimes an injection makes sense. And sometimes we can accomplish our goal without either.
Don't Make Medicine More Complicated Than It Needs to Be.
I'm always asking whether a treatment is effective, practical, and appropriate for the person sitting in front of me.
Glutathione is an incredibly interesting part of our natural antioxidant system, and modern liposomal delivery has made oral supplementation much more interesting to me.
For routine use, liposomal glutathione is usually where I start.
Because if we can support the same goal without another needle, another appointment, and another IV bag...
